If you live in New Jersey and no longer wish to be married, a divorce in NJ allows you to end your marriage. This is the formal process of asking the court to dissolve your union.
There are certain requirements you must meet to be able to file for divorce in New Jersey, and you also need to understand the process. This guide explains everything you need to know so you can move forward as easily as possible through the dissolution of your marriage.
If you want to file for divorce in NJ, either you or your spouse must have been a state resident for at least a year prior to the time you ask the court to end your marriage.
However, there is one exception to the one-year rule for situations where a spouse committed adultery. When adultery is involved, you can meet the state’s residency requirements and file for divorce in NJ as long as either you or your spouse has been a state resident for any period of time even if you have lived there for under a year.
